Curriculum

Japanese

Moonta Area School has a 20+ year tradition of offering Japanese language to its R-6 Primary students. Students engage in an enjoyable and varied Japanese program so that learning a second language is both fun and rewarding. We cover a variety of topics throughout the year, making sure that each year builds upon the last, increasing the opportunity to remember and utilise prior learning.

Students also participate in special events throughout the year, such as cooking classes at the end of terms 2 & 4, interacting with our annual Japanese Homestay visitors and R-6 Japanese Culture Festival.

Our Japanese program is planned using the Australian Curriculum. Students complete various tasks each term to demonstrate their ability to speak, listen to, read and write Japanese. In addition, a rich cultural programme, embedded in our learning plans, develops a deep understanding of Japan and its people. There is more information available here

For our upper Middle and Senior School students, we also offer a biannual 12-day cultural exchange trip to various locations around Japan in the term 3 holidays of "on" years. These trips are an amazing opportunity to experience international travel, develop independence and expand understanding of place in the world. While each trip (2015, 2017, 2019 & 2024!) highlighted different areas of Japan, we always include a visit our sister school whilst in Tokyo, a trip to hopefully see Mt Fuji, one of the theme parks & paying respects at Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

To find out more, please feel free to visit and talk with the Japanese teacher, Jane Swan, in the Language centre (with our fabulous 2019 mural on its walls).
